RAMS-26 Years and Counting; Down Memory Lane
Empire State Games - 1993
The 1993 ESGs were held at University of Rochester in a SCM format.
George McVey, in the right front row, served as meet director. Behind him are Anneliese and Bill Eibl (now 89 and 91), who no longer compete but still swim regularly.
In the left back row is Don Agate, a real sprinter who still holds district records. Don passed away in the late 1990s.
Empire State Games - 1994
In 1994 ESGs were again held in Syracuse. Masters swimming has been a part of ESGs for more than 20 years.
Guess who holds the team record for ESG medals: Kay Turner with 108 medals (72 gold).
Empire State Games - 1990
The Empire State Games were held in Syracuse NY in 1990, at Burnet Park pool, an outdoor 50m pool next to the zoo (another story).
Fifteen RAMS swimmers competed; note the t-shirts change colors each year. Betty Dunn has a great quilt made from all of her old swim meet t-shirts.
Team Picture - ESG 1989
Each year RAMS swimmers compete in the Empire State Games, held in various citys in both upstate, central and downstate NY.
The handsome guy to Kay's left is Ken T.
The best part is the t-shirt.
Here are our teammates who competed in the 1989 Empire State Games In Ithaca NY.
Timers for the One Hour Postal Swim - 2004
Timing for the One Hour Postal swim is as exciting as doing the swim itself.
Here Stephanie, Kelsee and Dana help time.
Annual One Hour Postal Swim
The One Hour Swim is a Championship Postal event; distances swum in an hour in individual pools are submitted and compared to other times from swimmers throughout US, Canada and abroad. RAMS have competed in this event for the past 20+ years and hold most of the District records for this postal.
The Hour Swim is both a physical and mental event. Here we see a former teammate, Andy, who struggled with the mental part of this swim in 2004 and found strength from a Krispy Kreme donut each 1000 yds.
Afterwards, Andy is resuscitated by teammates 'big' Jim B and Bill(y).
Opening Day at GVP
Seven brave souls swim an early Sunday morning workout at Genesee Valley Park pool in June 2003. l to r: Bruce, Peter, Kay, Ken, Dana, Kelsee and Jim. The water looks murky because the ice has not completely melted.
Canandaigua Annual Open Water Swim
Another highlight of our summers is the Open Water Swim on Canandaigua Lake. The weather is almost always beautiful and the swim is followed by a picnic for swimmers and their families. This event will be a National Distance Championship in 2009.
