On July 11, 2009, about two dozen RAMS swimmers braved the warm (~75 degree) but choppy waters of Canandaigua Lake for their 16th annual open water swim and the 2009 USMS 2-mi National Championship. Unfortunately, the weatherman was right and when lightening was seen about 38 minutes after the women started their two mile race, the competition was halted as swimmers quickly exited the lake.

This is the awards presentation for the women's 400 Free (must have been 35-39). I believe this is the first year ESGs featured Masters swimming. I am embarrassed to say that I placed third!!!!

First place was Ann Svenson of Adirondack; second place was Jane Murphy-Sherman (a breaststroker, of all things...) I think I got better at this race with age.

The Canandaigua Open Water swim was held on Saturday July 19.  A picture of most of our team participants can be found in the Photo Gallery in the Open Water section.  Results will be posted at the Sawbellies website.

Six teammates swim the 2 mi cable swim in Mirror Lake, Lake Placid on August 18.  Congratulations to all swimmers.!  Special congratulations to Bruce who set a new record for his age group.  Let that be an inspiration to Stewart who just turned 50. Place in age group is in [ ].  Complete results are attached.

THis year's Empire State Games Masters swimming competition was held July 27-29 in Westchester County at Pace University in a 25 yd format.  Because of the distance to the Games and the fact that the swim was not LCM or SCM format, only two RAMS swimmers competed.

Barry Symonds is a relatively new member of the team, joining us in December 2006.  Although he was an open water swim virgin at the Canandaigua Lake swim earlier this month, Barry is a seasoned pool competitor. Barry's specialties are breaststroke and IM and he earned 5 gold and 1 silver medals this weekend in the 50-54M group. Barry adds that after Lorie's instruction in the breaststroke and fly, he took 4 seconds off his best 100 Breaststroke time; 9 seconds off his 200 IM time and 15 seconds of his 400 IM time.  Coaching does help!
