As Rochester Area Masters (formerly MCC Marauders, formerly Southeast YMCA Masters) begins its 30th Anniversary year under the guidance and expert coaching of Lorie Rick, it seems appropriate to reflect back on how this team got its start. We currently have two of Lorie’s original team members still going strong: Dolly Hinckley and Louise Murray. Sometime in the early months of 1982 Mitch Pierson approached the aquatics director at Southeast Y in Pittsford and suggested they start a Masters Swim group. Lorie was contacted about coaching this new team and she agreed. She was only 21 at the time! Dolly recalls that there were 5 people at that first practice, including her and Louise. Their first meet was in November 1982 at SUNY Brockport. That meet was hosted by the Masters team from Bayview Y that included Kay Turner. Nine Southeast team members competed at that meet with 24 first place swims and 11 new Niagara District Records. In the fall of 1984 the team relocated to MCC where Lorie was the assistant coach of the age-group team and the team was renamed the MCC Marauders. The team really seemed to come together after this point and continued to grow in size as Masters Swimming also grew both in the Niagara District and nationally. New members joining at that time were Ken and Kay Turner, George McVey and Sue Marvel. We grew to over 60 swimmers with practices four evenings per week as well as Saturday and Sunday am. There were also some attempts to start early morning practices as well. In 1997 the team moved one last time to its current schedule of weeknight practices at MCC and weekends at RIT and four years ago we moved into the new RIT pool. In November 2004 just two days before her 85th birthday, Sue Marvel passed away. Sue embodied the ‘swimming for life’ philosophy and was an inspiration to us all. During her 16 years of competitive swimming with our team, she recorded over 100 Top Ten USMS swims and still holds over 50 Niagara District records. She is still sorely missed by her swimming family. Please add your comments about your own personal recollections about joining our Masters team.
